Something Relevant is a jam rock band formed in Mumbai in 2003 and consists of Aazin Printer (Lead Vocal), Aalok Padhye (Tabla and Percussion), Ryan Sadri (Saxophone), Luis Chico (Piano, Organ, FX), Tanmay Bhattacherjee (Guitar), Stuart DaCosta (Bass and Vocal) and Jehangir Jehangir (Drums).
The members of the band met in 2003 while at various colleges in the Mumbai college basketball and festivals circuit. Inspired by the few local bands dishing out original music and classical, rock, metal and jazz concerts at the south Mumbai amphitheater Rang Bhavan. A short while after the band was formed the legendary venue was tragically shut down as a by product of the passing of a noise regulation law. The band decided to play live in Mumbai wherever the opportunity presented itself. The band soon became regular fixtures at the legendary Mumbai Jazz club ‘Jazz by the Bay’.
From 2003-2008 the band did shows playing original music at jazz clubs, charity and rock concerts, monuments, weddings, parks, music and arts festivals, schools, theatre festivals, colleges, churches, pavements, streets, auditoriums and military stadiums. The exposure to audiences from a lot of different walks of life and backgrounds with different interests in music meant that Something Relevant had to constantly improvise and as a consequence the music became a multi genre influenced type of rock that had to make anyone dance.
The band soon began endorse and support the revival of ‘The Bandstand Culture’ of Mumbai that existed in the 1930′s-50′s where bands would play regularly at the various public venues in parks all over the city for free for the public.
In March of 2009, the band was picked by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to perform at the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta and to tour Indonesia and South Korea. Soon after, the band members quit their jobs to play in the band full time and in May 2010 went into YRF Studios and Blue Frog Studios in Mumbai to record and release it’s first album.
On the 17th of December 2009, Something Relevant released ‘Feels Good To Be Live’ (Deep Emotion Publishing/ Silk Road/ Universal/ Relevant Records). The music video for ‘City in a Situation’ received critical acclaim and tremendous support, both on the band’s Youtube channel, and on television, being aired nationally on VH1 and Zee Cafe.
Post release, the band toured extensively in 2010, both nationally and internationally, playing dates in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Goa, Bangalore, Delhi, as well as extended tours to Scotland in August 2010 for a month long ‘Feels Good 2B Live’ show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Indonesia in October 2010 and London England in November 2010, including a very special appearance at a UNICEF fundraiser for the victims of the recent floods in Pakistan and a gig at the prestigious Ronnie Scotts Bar in Soho.
